| Esta Damisela es fácilmente reconocida por sus 5 rayas verticales sobre su cuerpo blanco y amarillo. Sin embargo, puede oscurecer o palidecer de acuerdo a su entorno. A diferencia de la mayoria de las Damiselas solitarias, los Sargentos forman cardúmenes de cientos de individuos. Al igual que sus primas, pueden ser sumamente territoriales pero solo cuando cuidan de su nido, en el cual depositan huevos que tardan hasta 5 días en eclosionar. Durante el apareamiento los machos se vuelven mas oscuros y “bailan” para atraer a las hembras. Al igual que con los demás Peces Damisela, son los machos quienes construyen el nido y protegen los huevos. Los Sargentos comen de todo: algas, plancton, larvas de invertebrados, pequeños camarones, cangrejos y otros peces. Pueden llegar a medir hasta 23 cm, aunque normalmente son más pequeños. A los jóvenes se les puede encontrar en charcos inundados por la marea o limpiando a Tortugas Blancas de parásitos. |
| A member of the Damselfish Family, this instantly recognizable fish has 5 vertical black bars on a white and yellow background, but can become lighter or darker to match its surroundings. Unlike most Damselfish which are solitary, Sergeant Majors form schools of several hundred individuals. Like their cousins, they can be extremely territorial but only when guarding their nest, in which eggs are laid that take about 5 days to hatch. During mating season males become darker, and “dance around” to attract females. As with other Damselfish,it is the males that build and tend to the nest. Sergeant Majors feed on just about anything: algae, plankton, invertebrate larvae as well as small shrimp, crabs and fish. Though often smaller, Sergeant Majors can grow to about 23 cm in length. Look for juveniles in tide pools, or cleaning Green Sea Turtles of parasites. |
