| Las Blancas pueden pesar hasta 315 kg, y su caparazón puede llegar a medir 1.5 metros. Habitan en todos los océanos tropicales y subtropicales. Los machos son más grandes que las hembras y tienen la cola más larga. Los machos también tienen una “uña” a la mitad de las aletas frontales con la que se agarran a la hembra durante el apareamiento. Aunque de jóvenes son carnívoras, las adultas se alimentan exclusivamente de pastos marinos y algas, por lo que frecuentemente se les encuentra en aguas someras de las bahías y lagunas. Casi no se les ve durante sus primeros 5 años, pero se cree que habitan en el mar abierto durante este periodo. En promedio alcanzan la madurez entre los 20 y 30 años. No se sabe cuantos años llegan a vivir, pero se calcula que sea por lo menos el doble de eso, y se conocen individuos que han llegado a los 80. Las Blancas tienden a ignorar a buzos y los toleran mientras no se acerquen demasiado. La Tortuga Blanca es una especie en Peligro de Extinción. |
| Greens can weigh up to 315 kg, and their shell can reach 1.5 meters in length. They inhabit all tropical and subtropical oceans. Males are larger than females and have a longer tail. Males also have a claw midway up their front flippers with which they grab onto females during mating. Though juveniles are carnivores, adults feed exclusively on seagrass and algae and are commonly found in shallow lagoons and bays. Juveniles are rarely seen during their first 5 years, but are believed to live in open waters. On average they reach maturity between 20-30 years of age. Their average lifespan is unknown but estimated to be at least twice that age, and individuals have been known to reach the age of 80. Greens seem to take little notice of humans, and will often tolerate the presence of snorkelers or divers as long as they don’t get too close. The Green Sea Turtle is an Endangered species. |
