| There are over 110 species of Flounder worldwide. Some have even been found at the bottom of the Marianas trench, at depths of over 10,000 meters! These fish are expert camouflagers, and even go through the trouble of rearranging their face so the can hide against the ocean floor. Though born with one eye on each side of its face, they undergo a metamorphosis in which one eye migrates over to the other side. Heavily overfished, it is estimated that current flounder populations are only about 10% of what they were prior to the advent of industrial fishing. We advise against the consumption of flounders due to dwindling populations. The Peacock Flounder prefers sandy bottoms or those with rubble, though it can also be found near seagrass beds. It feeds mainly on small fish, shrimp & octupus, and reaches lengths of up to 46 cm. |
