| Éste, el mayor de los tiburones, tiene un cuerpo obscuro con motas blancas que lo hacen también el tiburón más bello. Es inofensivo y se alimenta nadando en la superficie con la boca abierta, filtrando así el plancton, krill (pequeños camarones) y pequeños peces. Los individuos más grandes pueden superar los 20 metros de longitud, pero el promedio es más cercano a 12 metros. Se desconoce cuantos años viven, pero se calcula que puede ser entre 60 y 100 años. Las hembras dan a luz a unos 300 cachorros, cada uno de 55-64 cm de largo. Habitan en todos los océanos tropicales y son migratorios. Una de las mayores congregaciones de Tiburones Ballenas ocurre cada verano cerca de Holbox, en la punta Noreste de la Península de Yucatán, donde el Caribe y el Golfo de México se encuentran. El Tiburón Ballena está clasificado como especie Vulnerable. Aunque todavía se le pesca en Asia, el crecimiento reciente del turismo de observación de esta especie a nivel mundial ha creado incentivos para su conservación. |
| This largest of all sharks has a dark body with random white spots that also make it the most beautiful. It is also harmless to humans. A filter feeder, it swims at the surface with its mouth open, scooping in plankton, krill (tiny shrimp) & small fishes. The largest individuals can top 20 meters in length, though the average is closer to 12 m. Their lifespan is unknown, but has been estimated between 60-100 years. Females give birth to 300 pups, each about 55-64 cm in length. They inhabit all tropical oceans and are migratory. One of the largest aggregations of Whalesharks occurs every summer near Holbox, on the Northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. The Whaleshark is listed as Vulnerable. Though it is still hunted in Asia, the recent growth in Whaleshark tourism worldwide is providing incentives for its conservation. |
