| La familia Mariposa incluye a más de 100 peces alrededor del mundo, seis de éstas en el Caribe. Estas coloridas criaturas son parientes de los peces Ángel y comparten el mismo cuerpo aplanado desde los lados. Una diferencia clave es la forma de las aletas superior e inferior: los Peces Mariposas las tienen redondeadas, mientras que la mayoría de los Ángeles tienen largas extensiones filamentosas. Los Peces Mariposas tienen una franja obscura que les atraviesa la cara de arriba hacia abajo, como una máscara que cubre los ojos. Normalmente se les encuentra sobre arrecifes, pastos marinos y en lagunas, en parejas que forman de por vida. Al igual que con los Ángeles, a los jóvenes se les ve limpiando a otros peces de parásitos. Porque se alimentan de algas que de lo contrario cubrirían y sofocarían a los corales, se les considera un “bioindicador” y su presencia es un reflejo de la salud general del arrecife. |
| This family includes over 100 different species worldwide, six of these in the Caribbean. These colorful creatures are closely related to Angelfish and share the same disc-like shape, flattened from the sides. If uncertain, check the shape of the top and bottom fins: they are rounded in Butterflyfish and have long filamentous extensions in Angelfish. Most Butterflyfish also have a dark band that crosses the face from top to bottom, masking their eyes. They are usually found over reefs, seagrass beds and in shallow lagoons in pairs that may mate for life. As with Angelfish, juveniles are often seen cleaning other fish of parasites. Because they graze on algae that could otherwise smother corals, they are considered “indicator species” and their presence reflects on the general health of the reef. |
