| These fish get their name from their elongated “snouts” and pig-like behavior of digging in the sand for mollusks, though it may also feed on hermit crabs and sea urchins. They prefer sandy bottoms near reefs. Like grouper, they are born female and become males. Its coloration can vary, with age, sex and location but is usually pale gray/brown for females and red/brown for males. In both cases the face is often darker than the rest of the body. They can measure up to 90 cm in length, weigh 10 kg, and live up to 11 years. The Hogfish is listed as a Vulnerable species. |
