| La familia de los peces Ángeles incluye a más de 70 especies a nivel mundial, 5 de ellas en el Caribe. Son peces esbeltos, con un cuerpo aplanado desde los lados, y con largas extensiones de sus aletas superior e inferior, que llegan hasta la cola. Los peces Ángel pueden ser muy coloridos y gráciles, por lo que son de los favoritos de muchos buzos. De jóvenes se alimentan principalmente de algas y plancton, y a aquellos menores de 5 cm frecuentemente se les ve limpiando a otros peces (roncos, pargos, cirujanos e incluso morenas) de parásitos. Los adultos se alimentan de esponjas, corales y algas. La coloración de los jóvenes puede ser muy distinta a la de los adultos. Son diurnos, y buscan cobijo durante la noche. Alcanzan la madurez alrededor de los tres años y medio, pueden llegar a vivir hasta tres veces eso, y forman parejas que, se piensa, son de por vida. Su apareamiento se lleva a cabo en la superficie, por la madrugada. |
| The angelfish family includes over 70 species worldwide, and 5 in the Caribbean. They are very slender fish with a disc-like body, as if flattened from the sides, with long extensions of the upper and lower fins that reach as far back as the tail. Angelfish can be very colorful and graceful, and are a popular favorite of snorkelers and divers. Young Angelfish feed primarily on algae and plankton, and those under 5 cm in length are often seen cleaning other fish (jacks, grunts, snapper, surgeons and even morays) of parasites. Adults feed mostly on sponges, corals & algae. The coloration and patterns of juveniles look very different from that of adults. Angelfish are active during the day and seek cover at night. They reach maturity at about three and a half years, can live up to three times as long, and form mating pairs that are thought to be lifelong. Spawning takes place at the surface, often in the early morning. |
