| Hay casi 50 especies de Yuca (y más de 20 sub-especies), todas nativas de las Américas. Aparte de tener bellas flores, algunas también tienen frutos, semillas y raíces comestibles. Mas recientemente se descubrió que producen esteroides de uso farmacéutico. Son polinizadas por polillas que se encargan de llevar el polen de la flor masculina a la flor femenina. Al mismo tiempo estas polillas depositan sus huevos en la flor femenina. Después la oruga se alimenta de las semillas producidas, pero dejando suficientes para que la planta se reproduzca. |
| There are nearly 50 species of Yucca (and over 20 subspecies), all native to the Americas. Apart from having beautiful flowers, some also have edible fruits, seeds and roots. More recently they were discovered to produce steroids used in the pharmaceutical industry. They are pollenated by moths which carry pollen from the male flower to the female flower. At the same time, these moths lay their eggs on the female flower. Later the caterpillar will feed on the seeds produced, with enough left over for the plant to reproduce. |
