| Hay entre 100 y 200 especies de Heliconia, según distintas fuentes. Son nativas de las Américas, y de las Islas del Pacífico, hasta Indonesia. Son parientes del Plátano y el Ave de Paraíso. Estas plantas albergan gran cantidad de fauna. La forma de la flor tiende a acumular agua, lo cual atrae insectos y sus depredadores. Hay murciélagos que duermen bajo sus grandes hojas. Estas son un escondite perfecto, ya que el peso de los depredadores sacude la rama y despierta a los murciélagos. Y muchas son polinizadas exclusivamente por colibríes, por lo que son plantadas para atraer a estos pajaritos. |
| There are between 100 and 200 different species of Heliconia, depending on the source. They are native to the Americas and the Pacific Isles, all the way to Indonesia. They are related to Bananas and Bird of Paradise. These plants host a wide variety of animals. The shape of the flower tends to accumulate rainwater, which attracts numerous insects, and their predators. There are bat species which sleep under their big floppy leaves. These are the perfect hiding place because the weight of most predators will shake the limb and wake the sleeping bats. And many are pollenated exclusively by hummingbirds, and they are often planted to attract these birds. |
