Esta popular planta de ornato debe su nombre
al explorador Francés, Louis Antoine de
Bougainville.  Fue su botánico Philibert
Commerson quien la encontró en Brasil, y la
introdujo al resto del mundo.  Un dato curioso
de aquel viaje es que Commerson, siendo
hombre enfermizo, disfrazó a su amante y
asistente Jeanne Baré de hombre para realizar
el viaje, ya que en aquellos tiempos las
mujeres estaban prohibidas en los barcos.  La
farsa fue descubierta a medio viaje y ambos
abandonaron la expedición en Mauricio, en el
Océano Indico.  Aun así,  Jeanne Baré se
convirtió en la primer mujer en darle la vuelta
al mundo cuando regresó a Francia varios
años despues, tras la muerte de Commerson.   
Dado el carácter enfermizo de Commerson, y el
grado al que éste dependía de su asistente, la
Sra. Baré merece ser reconocida por lo menos
como co-responsable de la popularización de
la Buganvilia a nivel mundial.

Se debate el número exacto de especies de
Bugainvillea, entre 4 y más de 30.   Lo cierto
es que hay cientos de variedades cultivadas
que complican aún más la identificación de
especies.  Las hay con flores blancas, rosas,
rojas, morada, naranjadas y hasta jaspeadas.   
Florean todo el año y pueden ser trepadoras,
arbustos o árboles.

Además de ser hermosas,  las flores (y las
hojas también) son usadas en medicina
tradicional para tratar la gripe, tos, dolor de
garganta y asma.
This popular ornamental plant owes its name to
French explorer, Louis Antoine de Bougainville.  It
was his botanist, Philibert Commerson who found
it in Brazil and introduced it to the rest of the
world.  A curious footnote of that voyage is that
Commerson, being a sickly man, disguised his
lover and assistant, Jeanne Baré, as a man so she
could help him on the voyage, as women were
barred from ships in those days.  The farce was
discovered halfway through the voyage, and both
abandoned the expedition in Mauritius, in the
Indian Ocean.  Still, Jeanne Baré became the first
woman to circumnavigate the globe when she
returned to France several years later, after
Commerson´s death.  Given Commerson´s sickly
constitution and the degree to which he depended
on his assistant, Mrs. Baré deserves to be
recognized as being co-responsible for the
popularization of the Bougainvillea worldwide.

The exact number of Bougainvillea species is
debated, with numbers ranging from 4 to more
than 30.  What is certain is that there are
hundreds of cultivars which complicate species
identification even further.  Flowers may be white,
pink, red, purple, orange or even variegated.  They
flower year round, and can be vines, bushes or
trees.

In addition to being beautiful, the flowers (and
leaves also) are used in traditional medicine to
treat the common cold, coughing, sore throat and
asthma.
